Cognitive Functional Therapy (CFT) aims to help individuals make sense of their own personal pain and develops an individualised management plan to help achieve some important goals.
CFT sessions begin with establishing your beliefs, emotions and coping responses around your pain. Social, physical and lifestyle factors are considered so that recommendations can be made to allow you to work on elements in your life that can positively impact your ongoing pain.
CFT rarely incorporates physical (manual) therapy. Instead, it focuses on forming an action plan for you to regain control of your pain by understanding it rather than fighting it.
CFT is suitable for anyone who has ongoing or recurrent pain. Guidelines advise that you may respond to changes you make within 3 to 8 half hour sessions. An emphasis is placed on the changes you make that will help you.
